Comment: This article was written after B.G.'s second trip to Shah-i Mashhad in Sept. 1971.  During this 2nd trip better photos and measurements were taken. The new photos enabled corrections in the reading of the inscriptions, particularly of the date, and corrections of the description and analysis.   The printing  quality of the photos in this article is very low. The same photos can be seen in good quality elsewhere in this documentation (see main page ).

The unique Herat photos of Ruedi Stuckert.
Comment:  From 1942 to 43 the Swiss architect Ruedi Stuckert did restoration work at the Herat Grand Mosque.  He measured and photographed the Mosque and the attached Ghurid mausoleum of Ghiyath ud-Din (1200 AD).  In 1945, long after Stuckert had left, the mosque was heavily renovated and altered, the mausoleum  was torn down to give way to a modern street.  Stuckert's photos are unique as they show parts of the mosque that are no more, and particularly as they bear witness of a splendid Ghurid monument that fell victim to misguided modernism. The above two articles contain Stuckert's photos, but in order to present them in better quality I have separately scanned the most important of them directly from the original photographs. See the photos.
In Part II  I try to  analyse the Ghurid parts of the Herat mosque in comparison to Shah-i Mashhad. It also contains  some information on Shah-i Mashhad that is missing in B. Glatzer 1973 (see above).
